Metal vs Wood: The Great Gate Debate

From basic wire mesh to sleek, modern glass, the gates that protect your home can be crafted from a variety of materials. However, two have consistently stood out as top choices: metal and wood.

Both of these materials are well-known for their ability to enhance the safety and curb appeal of your property, but they have some key differences in terms of strength, visual appeal, and cost.

In the guide below, we explore how wooden gates compare to gates made from metals like steel, aluminium, and cast iron. We'll go over the pros and cons of each material, before sharing our recommendation for the best choice. Let’s get started!

1. Strength and Durability

Wood is made up of long, slender fibres that are bound together by lignin, a natural adhesive. This fibrous structure gives wood a high level of strength and durability. It’s strongly resistant to damage, and can endure dents and scratches exceptionally well. If by chance it does suffer damage, the unique natural grain of wood helps conceal marks better than many other materials. Just keep in mind that wood does require a bit more TLC to safeguard it from weather, rot, and insects.

Metal is well-known for its impressive strength and resistance to damage. However, metal gates (especially those made from lighter metals like aluminium) can sometimes give way under enough pressure. If the damage is extensive and can't be easily fixed, you might need to consider replacing your gate sooner rather than later. It's also worth noting that aluminium and iron can be affected by seawater corrosion, so they might not be the best choice for seaside locations. On the bright side, most metals do very well in freshwater environments and require very little maintenance.

2. Aesthetics

The timeless beauty of wood has been treasured for millennia. Wooden gates effortlessly blend with traditional-style homes, adding a touch of rustic charm that elevates your property's curb appeal. They come in a variety of softwood and hardwood options, offering a wide range of colours and patterns for you to choose from.

On the other hand, metal gates often sport a sleek, modern appearance that can complement contemporary architecture and landscaping. They offer the opportunity for customisation with various designs, patterns, and finishes, although creating fully bespoke designs can be a bit more challenging due to the need for specialised formwork. Some options might also come across as a bit cold and industrial, especially when paired with a more traditional house design.

3. Cost

The cost of wood gates versus metal gates can vary widely depending on several factors, including the type of wood or metal used, the size and design of the gate, and local labour and material prices. In general, however, metal gates tend to be more expensive upfront compared to wood gates, especially if you're considering higher-end materials like wrought iron.
