WOODEN DRIVEWAY GATE FAQS

  • How do I measure for a driveway gate?

When measuring for a wooden driveway gate, we’ll require either a "Brick to Brick" or "Post to Post" measurement (click here for measurement guide). We recommend that you take a minimum of three measurements between the pillars/gate posts: across the top, middle, and bottom. If there are any discrepancies between measurements, be sure to note this down, so we can accommodate for this.

  • What is the best wood for a driveway gate?

The best wood to use will depend on your requirements and budget. Softwood is more affordable but less durable, whilst hardwood is more expensive but lasts longer. We offer a range of softwood and hardwood options, so get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss potential options with you.

  • Do you need planning permission for a driveway gate?

You usually will not require planning permission to install a new driveway gate. According to Planning Portal, however, driveway gates over 1 m in height will require planning permission if next to a highway used by vehicles. If you’re unsure if you’ll require planning permission, we recommend you contact the relevant local authority.

  • Should a gated driveway swing in or out?

A driveway gate can swing either inwards or outwards, but most people choose for their gate to swing inwards towards their own drive. This is usually the safest and most sensible option, as driveway gates are not permitted to swing out onto public footpaths or roads.

  • Will a wooden driveway gate increase my home’s value?

By improving curb appeal, security and privacy, a new wooden driveway gate can certainly add to the potential value of your property.

  • How high should a driveway gate be off the ground?

In order for the gate to operate freely, we recommend that allow a floor clearance of at least 3 inches, but no more than 6 inches.

If you are searching for high quality timber gates look no further than Wooden Gate Makers.  Please contact us for more information. We offer a full fitting service in Dorset and the surrounding area and can deliver in the UK.
