WOODEN Garden Gate FAQS

Wooden Gate Makers Company Logo
  • How do I measure for a garden gate?

When measuring for a wooden garden gate, we’ll require either a "Brick to Brick" or "Post to Post" measurement - click here to read our measurement guide. We recommend that you take a minimum of three measurements between the pillars/gate posts: across the top, middle, and bottom. If there are any discrepancies between measurements, be sure to note this down so we can accommodate for this.

  • What is the best wood for a garden gate?

The right wood type for your project depends on your needs and budget. Softwood is more affordable but less durable, while hardwood is more costly but has a longer lifespan. We offer a range of softwood and hardwood options, so get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss potential options with you.

  • Do you need planning permission for a garden gate?

You don’t normally need to get planning permission to install a new garden gate. With that said, you may need to get it if:

    • The gate is next to a highway used by vehicles (or the footpath of such a highway), and it exceeds one metre in height (from ground level)
    • It exceeds two metres in height (from ground level) if elsewhere

If you’re not sure whether you’ll need planning permission, we recommend you contact the relevant local authority.

  • Should a garden gate swing in or out?

Garden gates traditionally open inwards, as this creates a more welcoming feel when walking towards a home. You can choose to have your gate swing either way if you prefer.

  • Will a wooden garden gate increase my home’s value?

A wooden garden gate can enhance the value of your property by improving its curb appeal, reinforcing security, and making your garden more private.

  • How high should a garden gate be off the ground?

The gap below your gates should be high enough to allow for free movement, but not so high there's a large space below them. A gate that’s placed too high will look badly fitted and leave room for pets or small animals to squeeze through. Aim for at least 2 inches off the ground, although the ideal height depends on the size of your gate and the evenness of the terrain underneath it.

If you are searching for high quality timber gates look no further than Wooden Gate Makers.  Please contact us for more information. We offer a full fitting service in Dorset and the surrounding area and can deliver in the UK.
